In mathematics, especially in set theory, a set A is a subset of a set B, if A is "contained" inside B. The relationship of one set being a subset of another is called inclusion. Every set is a subset of itself.

More formally, If A and B are sets and every element of A is also an element of B, then:

  • A is a subset of (or is included in) B, denoted by AB,
or equivalently
  • B is a superset of (or includes) A, denoted by BA.

If A is a subset of B, but A is not equal to B, then A is also a proper (or strict) subset of B. This is written as AB. In the same way, BA means that B is a proper superset of A. If A is a proper subset of B, then there exists at least one element x of B which is not an element of A.

@paulklipp I think Agile can be given a broad but precise definition. Scrum or XP being subsets, kanban a developing topic.

Discussing subsets of population requires linguistic identifiers - IOW, "labels" - and any label will be perceived as offensive by someone.

@edsizemore If you're gonna say that moe is stale, at least realize that other subsets of anime are too.

@TheMikeKelly the UI is a bit on the weird side & not 100% convinced about the end result - but subsets are interesting groups to work with
